Does it worry you that your computer is running slower than when it was new? Is it frustrating that when you are in a hurry your computer seems to think that it has all day? Perhaps you need to do some routine maintenance today to speed up your computer.
You have here below a list of several items that you can do, all of which are easy and mostly free. Some people would call them secrets that your local computer repair facility can perform on your computer but really they are just plain common sense.
Probably the best thing you can do to speed up an older computer is to run the defragmentation program that is built into your computer. You don't even have to worry about installing a new program because it is already there. Microsoft includes it with your computer. The only responsibility that you have is to run it periodically. Running the defragmentation program will make your disk run quicker.
Another thing that you can do is to run the disk cleanup program that is also built into your computer and is already installed just waiting for you to use it. All that this program does is inspect your hard drive for current or potential problems with bad sectors. When it finds a bad sector it either works around it or corrects the problem so that your computer does not have to hesitate when it is searching for information stored on your hard drive.
You might also consider installing an anti-spyware program on your computer. You can get one for free from Microsoft called Internet Defender or you can step up your protection a notch or two by investing $30 or $40 in a commercial anti-spyware program. Although it is not free the additional level of security is well worth the relatively small investment.
The next thing you want to do is strip the excess fat from your computer. Over the time that you have owned your computer you have probably installed some programs that you no longer use. Tell your computer to uninstall them and this will free up additional room on your hard drive so that it can work more efficiently and effectively. If there are no programs that you bought that you want to remove then look for programs that the manufacturer of your computer installed. Most likely you have never used them and never will. They are only there to make money for large corporations. If it looks like a program that you will never use then again just tell your computer to uninstall the program.
While this next tip is not free it is one of the best speed boosters that you can consider for your computer. Check your instruction book and see how much random access memory your computer came with. Then find out how much your computer can handle in terms of maximum memory. If there is room for more memory capacity in your computer simply go to a local store with your instruction manual that contains your computer name and model and show it to them. They will be able to tell you what kind of memory you need and how much you can get. Then go home and take 10 minutes to install the new memory sticks in your computer. If you can plug a blender into an outlet then you are competent to install a stick of memory in your computer's system.
