If one should ask you what affiliate marketing is, what would you answer?

Well, one thing for sure is that affiliate marketing is the single fastest growth industry on the internet. Apart from being one of the most lucrative ways to take advantage of today's phenomenal success of the internet, it is also true that, it is one of the most creative ways to make money and have an online career.

In very simple terms, affiliate marketing is nothing more than selling products or services of other vendors on a commission basis. In other words, what your online business should do is to advertise and ultimately sell other companies' products to interested customers. Each time you close a sale, the company rewards your action by giving you a preset commission fee, calculated at a fixed percentage of the selling price.

Now, in order to be successful in affiliate marketing, there are four main areas of skills that you need to master:

1. First of all, you need to have your own website. Of course there are internet marketers out there that will tell you that you don't need to have your own site to do affiliate marketing. And this is partly true; there are indeed now the so called Web 2.0 sites (Squidoo for example) which will let you build your own pages in which you can incorporate your affiliate links. But, the real truth is that, in order to have a long term viable business, you need to be self sufficient and have your own virtual real estate.

2. Secondly, you have to go through the process of locating a hungry market that is people who have similar needs and are looking for a particular solution (product) to rectify a problem. What you have to assess is whether there is big enough demand for the product you want to sell and whether the competition (that is other marketers competing for the same market) is at an acceptable level that will allow you to make a profit.

3. Thirdly, after having built your attractive website and chosen the product or products you want to sell, you need to advertise and promote your internet presence. In other words, you need to attract internet traffic to your website. There are lots of ways to do this, both free and paid. As you realize, I am not going to get into more details in this article, as the list of the different skills and techniques for traffic generation can become quite long!

4. Fourth, a very important skill that you need to develop in the affiliate marketing world is to be able to track diligently your results and be prepared to do a lot of testing and experimenting. The good news is that nowadays you can find lots of very useful software tools (most of them are free I must say), that once you pass their learning curve can help you a lot to pave your success in affiliate marketing.

Needless to say that each of these four sets of skills needs a lot of effort to master and there is a lot of ground to cover until you reach an acceptable level of expertise. Anyone telling you that the internet is easy and you can become rich overnight, is lying through his or her teeth! Believe me, I've been struggling for almost two years now and I am just beginning to make sales that are considered worthwhile!

So, in a nutshell, would I say that affiliate marketing will give you financial freedom? My answer is a definite yes, provided you are willing to work hard, be patient and believe in yourself that you can make it work.
